In February of 2010, thanks to the Birmingham Race Course and VictoryLand, OMG was able to obtain a customized 16 foot box van, whom we promptly named Gertrude B. Longmiles. "Gertie" had 24 built in crates and has room for three set-up crates in her aisle if needed, to help transport adoptable Greyhounds across the country and into Canada. She has a temperature sensor built in and a roof mount heat/air unit so that we are able to keep the hounds in a temperature controlled environment while being transported. Thanks to generous donors such as Marge Sythe and Nancy Dotson for the generator, the Pecks (of CTW Kennel) for the roof mount A/C and John McCombs for donating the converter box, new radio and CB and for installing the aforementioned items! Gertie's successor, Ellanore, has boldly taken over the reins and is doing a fine job of getting the houndies where they need to be. Although Ellanore has 4 fewer built in crates, she has a couple of much needed amenities for the drivers. A small kitchenette and an over-the-cab bed sure makes the pet hauls a little easier on our old bodies and our thin wallets!
We are able to deliver hounds anywhere with in a 30 hour radius of Birmingham, Alabama. On some trips, while heading towards one adoption group, we stop along route to deliver one or two hounds to another group, which saves their volunteers time and money since they are along our way - time and money that could better be spent with the hounds! Several of our groups have us deliver hounds who have already been spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, up to date on vaccinations, and ultrasonic dental done - many times for much less expensive than what their local veterinarians can do! Some kennels at the Birmingham Race Course have worked for years (longer than we have been the staff here at the AGRAC!) with some out of state adoption groups, and we happily deliver their pets to the adoption groups they work with. We've delivered hounds from as far away as Seattle, Washington, to our West, Ontario Canada to our North and Nova Scotia, Canada to our East! Her adventures have also included delivering adoptable Greyhounds headed to participate in prison programs in Nashville, TN. and Augusta, Ga. The inmates teach the Greyhounds how to sit, down, stay, come when called, and how to walk politely on a leash before heading out to their adoption groups and into loving homes. Some adoption groups regularly come visit us to pick out their adoptable hounds, we tend think of them as "sister groups", since we work so closely together. We are more than happy to help - after all, this is what it is about - HELPING HOUNDS FIND LOVING HOMES!!
If you are with a group and would like more information on getting adoptable hounds from us, please give us a call at (205) 838-7475 or you can contact us below. We are able to do temperament testing with each hound and let you know how they react around children, small dogs, and cats.
