How You Can Help With Donations, Volunteering, And Even Sponsoring!

How To Donate

The hounds welcome your donations! Crates you no longer need, blankets, dog beds, dog food (dry or canned), stuffy toys, chew bones, cat food (Meow Mix) or cat litter,  etc... are always welcome! If you replace your old carpet, CALL US, we will pick up the old carpet and can use it as bedding for the hounds! You can also contribute through PayPal!

How To Volunteer

Want to spend an afternoon walking hounds? Take photos of hounds? Enjoy an afternoon of chatting while helping make fund raising collars? Or just want to play with hounds in the sprint field? We could sure use your help!! Having extra hands on Saturdays to speak with folks about adopting a Greyhound, going with us to Meet and Greets and just in general helping around the Adoption Center is always welcomed! Give us a call at (205) 838-7475
or
EMAIL US!

The days that we are loading up hounds for pet transports are days that we need "all hands on deck". Volunteers who can help us those days are most welcomed! From getting paperwork together to putting beds into each crate, we often (translate to "usually") get so busy that we're not even able to break away for lunch! Helping us load 24 (or more!) hounds into the hauler is GREYTLY welcomed! Even bringing us a bite of lunch is appreciated, we're not picky eaters when it comes to meals but in the dessert department, you'll never go wrong if it's chocolate!

How To Sponsor A Greyhound

Want to help a Greyhound but unable to donate time? You can always sponsor a Greyhound! Your donations will go straight to the Greyhounds to help with heartworm prevention, flea and tick prevention, and more! We don't turn away ANY Greyhound, regardless of what the hound's needs may be or the expense involved. With the support of people who care, we always manage to provide for even the most challenging medical needs hound!

Have something else that you'd like to donate that isn't on the list? Feel free to contact us about it!

Help Us Help The Hounds!

Since 2010, The Crazy Greyhound Ladies from Birmingham, Alabama have been transporting newly retired Greyhounds from the race track to adoption groups and adoptive families. The truck used to transport the dogs, affectionately named Gertrude B. Longmiles (Gertie), always got the houndies safely to their destinations... anywhere from Colorado to Maine and Florida to Canada... until October 2013. Poor old Gertie just couldn't go any further. Her spirit was willing but her heart just couldn't hold up. She stranded her two drivers and 19 greys in Knoxville, Tn. Hounds and humans were "rescued" by a commercial dog hauler the next morning and Gertie had to stay behind. Transporting the retirees to adoption groups and families across the U.S. and Canada has been the key factor in the transformation of the adoption program at the Birmingham race track.
The program was "circling the drain", the former director and staff had lost their fire and the greyhounds that were no longer competitive at Birmingham were in dire danger. There was no where else for them to go. For too many, it was literally the end of the line.
Then in July of 2009 a miracle happened for the greyhounds! An entirely new adoption staff came in and they were all on fire for getting as many retired greys into homes as they possibly could, no matter what lengths they had to go to! Within months, the race track purchased a used truck with a 16' box, already outfitted for greyhound transport and that's when The Crazy Greyhound Ladies (and now the poor Dudes That Put Up With Them!) really earned their name! These morons purposely lock themselves into a vehicle with anywhere from 24 to 30 dogs and hit the road, covering thousands of miles (they average 3,300 miles a month) and countless hours spent sleeping in the aisle between the greyhound filled crates. Yep, they really are crazy!
Transporting our retirees to other adoption groups has been the hinge pin in getting an additional 1,200 Birmingham Greyhounds safely onto sofas, ANNUALLY! That added to the average of 350 placed into local homes annually is like sending 4 happy hounds home, every day!
Also, on occasion, other breed rescues have asked us to help out. We always manage to add them to our greyhound transports. To date, we have transported Rotties, Bullies, Bassets, Saluki, Borzoi, Silken Windhounds, Bostons, Boykins, Mixes and even cats!
Thanks to the love and generosity of countless Greyhound lovers, we were able to purchase a new hauling truck in May 2014. Keep in mind, many of the greyhounds lying on your sofas right now came from Birmingham and found their way to you because we were able to deliver them to your local Greyhound Adoption group. Let's pay the love of greyhounds forward. Even $1.... just ONE teeny little dollar... HELPS!  It's as simple as clicking on the "DONATE" button on the bottom of this page. Give a little, give a lot... it ALL counts!

Remember, we are a 501 C 3 Non Profit, your donations are tax deductible!
